Pure Jojoba Oil can be used to assist in fighting wrinkles and extra dry and old skin, as well as skin plagued with many other ailments or problems. It assists in minimizing lines and wrinkles and will actually help rejuvenating the skin and new cell growth as well as sorting out problem skin, without clogging the skin with greasy mess.
It is suspected that it "tricks" the skin into stopping the over-production of sebum through somehow mimicking sebum, and helps in breaking down sebum in plugged-up pores. Sebum and jojoba oil will mix readily without sealing off the skin pores.
Dermatologists have also its non-irritating use for acne. Other materials such as mineral oil can cause anaerobic microbial growth and inflammation, redness and swelling in and around pores. Furthermore, it will not cause blackheads that contribute to acne.
Thorough studies have shown that it is non-irritating to the eyes and skin. The skin rapidly absorbs the jojoba oil, thus pores and hair follicles remain open and can function freely. Another remarkable property is that it is non-greasy and leaves no oily after-feel.
As a result, it will form a non-greasy, non-tacky layer with exceptional trans-epidermal water control, therefore assisting to fight wrinkles as well as dry, or oily skin.
It is extracted by cold pressing the bean and the resultant oil is actually a golden colored, odorless, non-allergenic liquid wax. The chemical content is very much like that of sperm whale oil - you could see it as the "vegetarian" substitute for sperm whale oil.
Sperm whale oil was used for decades as an oil for fighting wrinkles, but since the ban on whale hunting this is a wonderful replacement for it and is composed of liquid wax esters which make up 25 - 30% of our skin's lubricant, called sebum. As we age our rate of sebum production steadily decreases, particularly in women. This is a great plus point as it will help to replace the natural sebum lost during the aging process.
It controls transpiration water loss (water and moisture loss through skin) and contains flaking and dryness of the skin, thereby also helping to fight wrinkles.
In dermatological test done by Christensen and Packman, it was shown that skin's suppleness increase by 45% after application and after 8 hours the effect was still present.
It was also found that it softens and smoothes the skin, achieving fine line reduction. In one test, 20 women's skin "compliance" increased with 37% after 30 minutes and remained so for a hour.
Continued use results in reducing superficial facial lines - and the reduction of such lines was 26%, 18% and 11% after 1, 4 and 8 hours in conducted tests. It was also tested for hypoallergenic reactions and two out of 50 people with known allergic skin types showed reactions to Jojoba. This reaction on the inherently hyper-allergic skins cleared completely after 24 hours.
Professor Zille of Port Elizabeth University carried out further studies on the anti-bacterial effects and the results were presented at a Coskem Congress held at Mintek.
Studies at the University of Michigan support the conclusion that 5 of the most common bacteria, including staphylococcus aureus and pseudomonas aeruginosus, as well as the fungus candida albicans were not capable of growing when the oil was present.
The medicinal working was studied at the Pharmaceutical Department at the University of Port Elizabeth and found that it destroys the bacteria staphylococcus and pseudomonas within 1 hour and 15 minutes. Studies at the Ben Gurion University in Israel have shown that it relieves the symptoms of psoriases.
