Hoodia Gordonii

This plant from the desert in Southern Africa must be one of the most talked about plants, and a huge amount of hype surrounds it.

This much talked about plant is a cacti growing in the African desert and is a leafless succulent that grows about 50 cm in height and has fleshy stems covered with thorns.

It is the succulent flesh of this plant (also locally known as "ghaap") that is of importance, as it has proven in clinical tests to reduce the appetite, as well as craving, and best of all, without side effects.

It bears dark purple flowers with an unpleasant smell to attract flies and blowflies to pollinate the flowers.

The active principle in Hoodia gordonii is known as P57, yet problems were had between the company that wanted to register a patent on it, and the indigenous people of the Kalahari desert - the Khoi-San (also known as "Bushmen") - as they have used this succulent for centuries.
