This is a robust grass with spongy roots and long, thin leaves with small brown to purple flowers. It is also referred to as vetivert.

The roots and essential oil are used.

Properties

This aromatic herb has sedative and antiseptic properties and is also useful to promote the manufacture of red blood cells.

  • Internal use
    • It can be used internally for circulatory and nervous problems.
  • External use
    • Externally it is used to create a tonic bath, which is the reason why it is often included in high quality soaps. It has an application to combat lice as well.
  • Aromatherapy and essential oil use
    • The earthy smell of vetivert essential oil will ease tension and stress and stop you from being over-sensitive.
    • It brings a feeling of quiet calm and while balancing estrogen and progesterone will help PMS as well as menopausal ailments.
    • Furthermore it alleviates muscular aches and pains and helps to promote general well being.
    • On the skin, it has a nourishing and moisturizing effect and is useful for dry, irritated or dehydrated skin.
    • The therapeutic properties of vetiver oil are antiseptic, aphrodisiac, cicatrisant, nervine, sedative, tonic, sedative and vulnerary.
