It is a covering shrub with rooting branches and white, pink-flushed flowers, followed by glossy, spherical, red fruits.

The leaves are used.

Properties

It is an astringent, anti-bacterial herb with mild diuretic action and is often used as an urinary antiseptic.

It contains a phenolic glycoside (arbutin), as well as other hydroquinone derivatives and tannins, hyperoside, monotropein and triterpenes.

Therapeutic uses urinary tract infection

  • Internal use
    • It is used with great success to treat infections of the lower urinary tract and vaginitis. It is also used with good results for cystitis, dysuria, pyelitis and lithuria.
    • When using this herb to treat urinary tract infection, it is best to exclude acidic fruits and juices.
    • It is also effective in paraplegic patients with recurrent cystitis, resistant to conventional antibiotics.
  • External use
    • None noted.
  • Aromatherapy and essential oil use
    • None noted.

Uva ursi contains compounds that can act as an irritant and large amounts must NOT be taken by pregnant women, children or people with kidney disease.

Large amounts of Uva ursi should not be used continuously for an extended period.
