Description of shiitake

These mushrooms are native to Japan, China, as well as other Asian countries and normally grow on fallen broadleaf trees.

Parts used

Properties of shiitake

It has good properties in preventing high blood pressure as well as heart disease, controlling cholesterol levels and boosting the immune system, and is also useful in fighting cancers. The lentinan contained in the mushroom is the active ingredient most researched and praised for its disease fighting capabilities.

Therapeutic use

  • Internal use
    • The lentinan has immune-stimulating capabilities and although it does not attack the cancer cells directly, it activates the lymphokine-activated killer (LAK), as well as the natural killer (NK) cells which in turn combat various forms of cancer - including carcinoma, hepatoma and sarcoma.
    • It furthermore stimulates the immune system to produce interleukin and tumor necrosis factor (TNF), which prevents the spread and growth of tumors and cancers.
    • The lentinan is also very helpful in fighting chronic fatigue syndrome, as well as Lyme disease, the common cold and macular degeneration.
    • The eritadenine found in shiitake mushrooms also helps to lower cholesterol levels.
  • External use
    • None noted.

Safety precautions and warnings

Allergies to shiitake are rare, but taking excessive amounts may cause diarrhea and bloating.
