Reishi has been part of traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2000 years and is widely regarded as the 'elixir of life' and is used in many tonics.
In Chinese medicine it is also known as Ling Zhi.
It is a bracket fungus bearing large stalked fan-shaped fruiting body and grows on living or dead wood of deciduous trees.
The fruiting body of the mushroom is used.
It is a tonic, sedative herb that is expectorant, lowers blood sugar and cholesterol levels, controls coughing, while relieving pain and stimulating the immune system. It improves heart and liver function and has anti-allergy, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.
Long term continuous use may lead to a dry mouth, throat and nasal passages and can also cause itchiness, stomach upsets and nosebleeds. These symptoms are very rare, and were only found where high dosages were taken continuously for six months.
The cause of these symptoms are unknown, but may be related to an allergy that developed to reishi.
It is best not to take reishi continuously for more than four months, and if taken continuously, take a break for a month before resuming use again for another four months.
People taking blood thinning medication should consult their doctor before taking large amounts of reishi.
