Plantain is a well-known herb that grows in rich, moist places, in fields, by the roadsides, and is common in Europe and America. Plantain is a perennial herb with almost no stem, with a round flower-stalk from 1 ft to 3 ft in height, arising from a fibrous root. The leaves are smooth, oval, and toothed, narrowing sharply and abruptly to the leaf
stalk. The flowers are white, small and numerous, overlapping like shingles.
The leaves and above ground parts are used in herbal preparations.
It is an astringent herb that has diuretic, expectorant and anti-mucus properties, as well as mild anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is healing, controls bleeding and fights bacterial infections.
It contains iridoid glycosides (aucubin, catalpol, asperuloside), tannins, mucilage, phenolic acids, flavonoids and unidentified saponins.
