Lemon verbena is a deciduous shrub, with lemon-scented, lance-like leaves. Tiny lilac to white flowers are produced.
The fresh and dried leaves, as well as the essential oil are used.
It is an aromatic, astringent herb, rich in volatile oils, which has a calming effect, relieving spasms (especially of the digestive system) while reducing fever.
The oil contains neral and geranial, borneol, limonene, geraniol, nerol, terpineol, caryophyllene, curcumene, myrcenene, isovalerianic acid, the flavonoids apigenin, luteolin and 6-hydroxylated flavones with their methyl esters (eupafolin, hispidulin, eupatorin and salvigenin).
- Internal use
- Lemon verbena can be used internally to treat feverish colds. Its antipyretic properties are great to bring down fever and to fight colds and ease asthma.
- It is also very effective to bring about a calming and sedating effect and has a positive effect on nervous digestive disorders. It helps with indigestion, colic, flatulence, as well as diarrhea.
- External use
- Externally, the herb can be used to treat acne, boils and cysts.
- Aromatherapy and essential oil use
- Lemon verbena essential oil has a relaxing and de-stressing effect on the mind, while helping to stimulate appetite and controlling stomach spasms, cramps, indigestion and flatulence.
- It has a positive effect on the liver, especially in cases of alcohol abuse and resultant liver damage, and helps relieve bronchial and sinus congestion.
- Furthermore, it is useful in dealing with nervous insomnia and calming heart palpitations.
- On the skin, it helps to reduce puffiness and is also useful as a hair tonic.
- The essential oil has insecticidal, bactericidal, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, aphrodisiac, digestive, emollient, febrifuge, hepatic, insecticide, sedative, stomachic and tonic properties.
