It is a clump forming perennial with woody rootstock and finely toothed kidney-shaped leaves and clusters of tiny yellow-green flowers.
The dried aerial parts are cut and dried for use, while the plant is flowering.
It is a bitter astringent herb that controls bleeding and discharges.
It contains ellagitannins (agrimoniin, laevigatin F and pedunculagin) as well as flavonoids.
- Internal use
- It is used internally for excessive or irregular menstruation, as well as menopausal problems.
- Lady's mantle is a great herb to use in cases of mild diarrhea and a gargle is effective for sore throats.
- It also has venotonic properties, which makes it useful to treat vascular problems.
- External use
- Has an astringent effect on the skin and protects newly formed elastin fibers. The venotonic properties help with vascular health.
- It can furthermore be used to treat sores and septic wounds.
- It contains 6-8% tannins, mainly oligomeric gallotannins, and flavonoids, which are the components responsible for its anti-elastase and free radical scavenging activity.
- It furthermore has an astringent effect on the skin, and helps to protect the elastin fibers, which are extremely thin - between 1 and 3 Tm in diameter.
- Elastin is required for skin elasticity, and is a protein in the skin, which together with collagen and glycosaminoglycans, makes up the connective tissue. All these elements originate in the fibroblast.
- Aromatherapy and essential oil use
This herb should only be used in cases of mild diarrhea.
