Tonga, awa, kava and kew.
It is a robust, erect evergreen shrub with stout rhizomes, fleshy stems and round, heart-shaped leaves. Small flowers are produced in spikes.
The rhizomes and roots are used.
Kava Kava is a bitter, pungent herb that has diuretic properties and helps to increases perspiration, relieves pain and spasms and has anesthetic effects, while it is also used as an aphrodisiac.
It contains styrylpyrones (known as kavapyrones and kavalactones), kawain, methysticin, dihydrokawain, dihydromethysticin, yangonin and desmethoxy-yangonin.
- Internal use
- This herb has sedative, muscle relaxing, anti-convulsive, tranquilizing and analgesic properties.
- It is used internally for tension, anxiety, insomnia and stress.
- In folk medicine, it is also used for genito-urinary infections, gall-bladder complaints, gonorrhea, arthritis and rheumatism.
- Kava Kava roots are the basis of a ritual Polynesian drink that has a calming affect, while heightening mental awareness.
- External use
- Kava Kava is also used externally to treat joint pains, toothache and mouth ulcers.
- Aromatherapy and essential oil use
Not to be used during pregnancy, lactation or when suffering from endogenous depression.
Using this herb internally can cause drowsiness. Excess use can cause stupor, while prolonged use can temporarily cause yellow coloring of the skin, hair and nails.
When taking this herb, care should be taken not to use alcohol or barbiturates, as it can easily cause drunkenness.
People with any liver problems, or that suffer from alcoholism should best avoid this herb.
