Yellow root, eye balm, golden root, yellow puccoon, Indian turmeric, jaundice root and poor man's ginseng.
It is a perennial herb, with stems bearing one to three leaves, emerging from a creeping rhizome with white flowers above the leaves, developing into small red fruits.
The dried root and rhizome is used.
It is a bitter, fetid and alternative herb that has haemostatic, stomachic and laxative properties, that checks bleeding, reduces inflammation, stimulates the flow of bile as well as uterine contractions, while acting as a mild laxative as well. It improves digestion and has a decongestive effect and is effective against bacterial and amebic infections.
It contains isoquinoline alkaloids (hydrastine, berberine, canadine) as well as other minor compounds.
- Internal use
- It is excellent for use to stop diarrhea, as well as bleeding - especially after giving birth.
- Since it stimulates appetite, it is useful when a poor appetite is being experienced, and furthermore helps to aid digestion and the flow of gastric juices and bile, and acts as a mild laxative, while assisting with peptic ulcers.
- Goldenseal has a wide variety of uses, and is also employed to fight sinusitis and mucus, while for women it is useful with painful menstruation and pelvic inflammation disease.
- External use
- Externally it can be used to treat eczema, ear inflammation, conjunctivitis, vaginal inflammations, as well as gum disease.
- Aromatherapy and essential oil use
Uterine contractions are stimulated by this herb, it is best avoided in pregnancy.
Although it effectively kills pathogenic organisms in the intestine, it also kills off the beneficial organisms, it should therefore only be taken for a limited period - not exceeding 4 - 6 weeks.
When taken internally it may counteract short-acting blood thinners.
