Cleareye and muscatel sage.
Perennial, aromatic herb, very hairy, with large, oval, light green, leaves which are up to 23 cm long. The margins of the leaves are concave. Whorls of small white to purple flowers encircle the stem, enclosed by long lilac bracts. Flowers appear in spring and summer. The herb is common to South West and Central Europe to Central Asia.
The dried leaves and the essential oil are used, as well as the seeds to a lesser degree.
A bitter, astringent, warming herb. Anti-spasmodic, digestive, nervine, stimulates the uterus and estrogen production. Controls vomiting and is traditionally known as an aphrodisiac.
It contains flavonoids (flavones) as well as rosmarinic acid, while the essential oil is high in linalool, linalyl acetate, b-caryophyllene and myrcene.
- Internal use
- Combats nausea, vomiting, menstrual complaints and stimulates the appetite.
- Fritters are made from the young leaves, and the flowers are brewed as a tea or added to salads.
- The young leaves are infused with elderflowers in wine, which gives a muscatel bouquet to the wine, and are also used to flavor vermouth and other liqueurs.
- External use
- The seeds are an ingredient of ointments or washes used to draw out foreign objects in the skin or washing the eye.
- Clary sage leaves are also used for minor injuries and wounds.
- Aromatherapy and essential oil use
- Working on the hypothalamus it helps relieve anxiety, fear, paranoia and delusions and promotes vivid dreams and dream recall.
- It naturally supports estrogen production and acting on the pituitary gland helps to regulate menstrual disorders and is useful during menopause.
- It furthermore is useful for the respiratory tract and in particular asthma, and when used in hair care products help to balance sebum production.
