An aromatic grass grown in Sri Lanka and Java, flowers appearing in spikes. Stems resemble sugar cane and the leaves are long, floppy and lance-like.

Parts used

The stems are cut off at ground level and the oil is extracted.

Properties

This plant is part of the same familyas lemon grass, but has nearly the same properties and fragrance as that of Melissa officinalis.

The oil contains acetylizable alcohols (geraniol) and aldehydes (citronellal).

  • External use
    • The oil is used externally as an insect repellant.
  • Aromatherapy and essential oil use
    • The essential oil of Citronella has an uplifting effect on your mood and is a great insect repellant, while its antiseptic qualities are good for fighting colds and flu.
    • It has a softening effect on the skin and also helps to combat excessive perspiration - making it extremely useful for use on feet.
    • It has antiseptic, bactericidal, deodorant and insecticide properties.
