Capsicum, Tabasco, hot pepper, chili and spur pepper.
Cayenne pepper is produced from the capsicum herb, which is a tender, variable annual with branched stems and simple oval, lance-shaped leaves. Bell-shaped, white to green flowers appear in spring and summer, and are followed by hollow fruits, which display differing colors when ripe.
The fruits are used for culinary and medical purposes.
Cayenne pepper has a tonic and antiseptic effect, stimulating the circulatory and digestive systems and increasing perspiration.
It contains capsaicnoids such as capsaicin, as well as vitamin C, saponins and pyrazines. The color of the fruit is due to the carotenoids contained.
- Internal use
- Cayenne pepper is used internally to improve circulation, for the cold stage of fevers, varicose veins, asthma, and digestive problems such as dyspepsia, colic and flatulence.
- It can be used for laryngitis as a gargle.
- Noted as being important as a gastrointestinal detoxicant.
- It is also used as a food preservative in the tropics.
- External use
- When applied topically to the skin, the capsaicin causes a sensation of pain and warmth, which can cause extended reversible insensitivity of the skin, which is useful in treating various forms of topical pain such as arthritis, lumbago and spasms.
- Used externally for sprains, itching, arthritis, unbroken chilblains, neuralgia, and pleurisy.
- Aromatherapy and essential oil use
Care must be taken when handling fresh peppers, as severe eye irritation can occur if the eyes are touched after handling the peppers.
When eaten, it may cause painful irritation of the mucus membranes of the mouth and throat and excessive intake can be dangerous.
