Catuaba is a small, vigorous growing tree with yellow and orange flowers and small yellow oval-shaped inedible fruit and grows in the rainforests in the northern part of Brazil.
The bark is used and the chemical compounds include alkaloids, tannins, aromatic oils and fatty resins, phytosterols, cyclolignans, sesquiterpenes as well as flavonoids,
Although it is in the same plant family as coca - the plant from which cocaine is derived - but it DOES NOT contain the narcotic alkaloids found in coca.
Catuaba is the most famous aphrodisiac plant in Brazil and has a long history of use and is specifically used to enhance the erection.
The aphrodisiac qualities of Catuaba was first discovered by the Tupi Indians in Brazil and has singing its praises ever since.
In Brazilian herbal medicine today, Catuaba is considered a central nervous system stimulant with aphrodisiac properties.
A herbal tea made from the bark is used for sexual impotency and lack of sexual interest, weakness, poor memory or forgetfulness.
In European herbal medicine it is also considered an aphrodisiac as well as a nerve and memory stimulant.
Clinical studies have shown that it has antibacterial and antiviral properties and one study protected mice from lethal infections of Escherichia coli as well as Staphylococcus aureus. It furthermore had a strong inhibiting action on the HIV virus due to inhibiting the absorption of the HIV virus into the cell.
In another study Catuaba showed a dopamine-mediated antidepressant-like effect and could have potential in the treatment of depressive disorders.
The use of Catuaba bark can also result in increased erotic dreams and is also thought to normalize prostate function.
