It is a fungus and the dried or fresh cells are used, although the dried cells are mostly used commercially.

Parts used

The whole sponge is used.

Properties

This compound has nutritional as well as certain medicinal uses.

Therapeutic uses PMS

  • Internal use
    • The Commission E has approved it for use to treat loss of appetite, as well as a supplement for chronic forms of acne and furunculosis (where several boils appear at the same time).
    • It is also effective in treating diarrhea (acute and traveler's diarrhea and diarrhea associated with the use of a feeding tube), as well as treating PMS, as well as fighting candida (yeast) sensitivity, although it itself is a fungus.
    • It furthermore is an excellent source of vitamins.
  • External use
    • Externally brewers yeast is used to treat ulcers.
  • Aromatherapy and essential oil use
    • None noted.

Safety precautions and warnings traveler's diarrhea

Migraine-like headaches may occur in some individuals that are sensitive to it and should the fresh fermentable yeast be used, flatulence may occur. When taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors at the same time, an increase in blood pressure may occur.
