Gum Benjamin.
It is an evergreen tree with gray resinous bark and oval leaves with minutely teethed ridges and downy gray undersides.
The gum resin is used.
It is an antiseptic, astringent and expectorant herb, with an almost camphor/cinnamon smell. Regarded as a sedative in Western aromatherapy and a stimulant in Chinese medicine.
- Internal use
- Used by Western herbalists and naturopaths for treating
- coughs
- colds
- other infections of the respiratory tract.
- It is also held as an effective treatment for
- sore throats
- ulcers
- mouth ulcers
- Benzoin is used as an ingredient in cough mixture and cold remedies, such as Friar's balsam.
- External use
- Used for healing wounds and ulcerated sores
- In cosmetics and perfumery, it is used as an anti-oxidant and fixative in cosmetics and perfumes, and a food flavoring in commercial catering.
- Aromatherapy and essential oil use
- Using it in aromatherapy will lift the spirits and ward off depression and the feeling of loneliness, while adding calm.
- It has a positive effect on the respiratory system and helps to expel fluid wastes from the lungs, while calming the digestion and balancing blood sugar.
- It is a good volatile essential oil to use for cracked and dry skin, increasing elasticity and reducing redness, irritation and itching.
- Benzoin essential oil is great to relieve itching skin and has the following properties
- antiseptic
- astringent
- carminative
- deodorant
- diuretic
- expectorant
- sedative properties and helps to relieve itching skin.

Benzoin oil may make a person drowsy, and should not for use when an alert mind is needed. A too high concentration can possibly cause irritation.
