Other names
Wax myrtle, candleberry and Southern bayberry.
It is an evergreen shrub or small tree with oblanceolate leaves followed by flowers and then spherical gray-white waxy fruit.
The root bark is normally used for medicinal purposes and the wax from the fruit for making candles and soap. The patented extract used for the removal of cellulite however uses the bark, leaves and flowers for extraction.
It is a bitter, astringent and aromatic herb that stimulates circulation, increases perspiration and controls bacterial infection.
The root bark contains myricitrin, as well as tannins and triterpenoids (myricadiol, taraxerol and taraxerone), while the wax contains esters of palmitic, myristic and lauric acid.
The patented fractionated extract contains essential oil, triterpenes (taraxerol, myricadiol, taraxerone), gallic tannins, flavonoids (myricetin and dihyidromyricetin).
- Internal use
- It is used internally for fevers, colds, flu, excessive mucus, colitis, excessive or heavy menstruation, as well as vaginal discharge.
- External use
- The traditional use of bayberry is for itching skin, ulcers, sores, dandruff and hair loss.
