It is a deciduous tree with single white flowers followed by orange-red fruit bearing a hard kernel.

Parts used

The fruit, kernels (Xing ren) and oil are used.

Properties

It is a warming, bitter-sweet herb, helping to control coughing. The laetrile contained in the pip is used in cancer therapy. It must however be noted that excessive amounts of the pip can be toxic.

Therapeutic uses cosmetic

  • Internal use
    • The kernels can be used internally for respiratory problems, bronchitis and dry constipation.
    • Apricot kernels are used in Chinese medicine (Xing Ren)to stop coughing and wheezing and are used alone  specifically for a dry cough, while they are mixed with other herbs to treat a productive cough.
    • Some experimental work has been done on how apricot kernels can assist in cancer, but this work is still in the beginning phases, and is not seen as a "main-stream alternative" remedy.
    • The fruits also have benefit in relieving constipation - but take care not to eat the unripe fruit, as this may cause diarrhea and griping.
  • External use
    • The oil is used in cosmetics and the finely ground kernels are used as a fine exfoliating medium in fine cosmetic applications.
  • Aromatherapy and essential oil use

Excessive intake of the amygdalin contained in apricots can cause nervous system depression and respiratory failure. Eating the unripe fruit can cause gastric upset.
