anti-wrinkle cream

In this issue:

Crème de Vie - the new miracle cream

The quest for a wrinkle-free face has been the holy grail since man started walking upright, but even with the time, effort and money spent by all cosmetic manufacturers, few could actually produce a product that would help stop wrinkle formation and remove wrinkles already formed.

Formulating biochemist, Dr. Bye, describes it as "one of the most exciting developments in the field of cosmetics and anti-aging".

anti-wrinkle cream

Some months ago we mentioned that this cream is being formulated by a company known to us, and since then we have been bombarded by thousands of e-mails requesting more information.

The injection of botulism, (Botox™) which is a powerful neuro-toxin, has been the only way for women and men to help reduce wrinkle formation, but even this powerful toxic compound has its limitations, since it cannot be used around the eye area and has other potentially unpleasant side effects.

This all changed when a private laboratory in Spain, in collaboration with a university research facility, and with partial funding by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology, developed this new hexapeptide molecule.

This molecule is a non-toxic, non-irritant compound that modulates the excessive stimulation of the facial muscles, relaxing facial tension and also helps to reduce the depth of already formed wrinkles.

For the compound to be effective, it must be included at a 10% solution to a cream. Some companies are now starting to include this molecule into their formulations, but when used at less than the 10% inclusion rate, the cream cannot be as effective, as shown in the clinical trials that were done when the research and development of the molecule was performed.

Calcium and osteoporosis

Osteoporosis (the word is derived from the Latin word meaning "porous bones") is a disease which mainly affects women and usually manifests itself in a woman's late 40s.

It has been suggested that osteoporosis afflicts more women than strokes, diabetes, breast cancer or arthritis. This debilitating disease leads to bone deterioration and, unfortunately, a person can be totally unaware of having this condition until, what should have been a minor accident causes a bone fracture - often a wrist or a hip. There are cases reported where even an enthusiastic hug has caused cracked or broken ribs!

The loss in bone density caused by osteoporosis results in painful compression fractures in the vertebrae of the back which pinch the nerves in the spine, causing loss of height and crowding of the internal organs.

This deterioration of the vertebrae in the spine causes a noticeable "hunch" or "dowagers" back. Teeth are lost when the structure of the jawbone weakens and loss of bone density affects the structure of all bones in the body.

It has been reported that a long-term inadequate intake of calcium leads to the development of osteoporosis. It has also been suggested that mega doses of calcium should also be avoided as this may lead to excessive calcium deposits on bone mass.

The recommended daily allowance of calcium:

Age

Daily mg of calcium required

Children 4-6

800

Children 7-10

800

Males 15-18

1200 - 1300

Males 19-24

800 - 1000

Males 25-50

800 - 1000

Males 50+

800 - 1200

Females 15-18

1200 -1400

Females 19-24

800 - 1000

Females 25-50

800 - 1000

Females 50+

800 - 1200

When referring to the above table, it is interesting to note that it is recommended that teenage females have a greater need of calcium. It has been reported that this is due to the fact that teenage female's bodies place an extra demand for calcium in this growth phase.

Please also note the increased amount of calcium intake recommended for older women. It is also suggested that lactating and pregnant women should take 1200 mg of elemental calcium daily.

Calcium is best obtained from dairy products, natural foodstuffs, and by following a proper diet, but due to our modern lifestyle and diet it may a good idea to take a supplement, ensuring adequate calcium intake.

When taking a supplement, please note that the important information to look out for, on the box or package insert, is the amount of elemental calcium that is present in the supplement.

It is reported that calcium carbonate (an ingredient often listed on calcium supplements) contains a higher percentage of elemental calcium than other forms. To ensure proper calcium absorption, vitamin D should be added since calcium cannot be absorbed if vitamin D is not present.

  • Simple test to determine calcium absorption

If you are in doubt of the efficacy of your calcium supplement, place a tablet in a cup of vinegar. The tablet should dissolve in half an hour. If it doesn't then the tablet will not dissolve in your stomach either, and a different brand of calcium should be used. It is generally accepted that the faster the tablet dissolves in the vinegar, the faster the absorption into the body.

Calcium is absorbed through the duodenum and it has been reported that any calcium supplement should be taken at night after a meal, as the body's metabolism slows, giving time for maximum absorption.

Neroli essential oil - the therapeutic and fragrance use

Neroli oil is extracted from the flowers of Citrus aurantium var. amara (a.k.a. Citrus vulgaris and C. Bigardia) of the Rutaceae family and is also known as orange flower and Neroli bigarade. Neroli oil has a sweet, floral and slightly haunting aroma, the color is pale yellow and the viscosity is watery.

This essential oil is also known as 'orange blossom' and it takes about 1000 lbs. of orange blossoms to make 1 lb. of Neroli oil. The name Neroli is said to originate from the Italian princess, Anne-Marie de la Tremoille, Countess of Nerola, who used the oil as a perfume and to scent her bathwater and gloves.

The orange petals were used in China in the making of cosmetics and are still an ingredient for making traditional smelling Eau-de-cologne. Orange petals are often associated with marriage, purity and brides who traditionally wore them in their hair.

neroli essential oil

Neroli oil is extracted from the small, white, waxy flowers of the bitter-orange tree by steam distillation, but can also be extracted using hydrocarbon extraction.

Neroli oil is non-toxic, non-sensitizing, non-irritant and non-phototoxic, yet do not use it when a sharp clear head is needed, as it can be very relaxing.

The therapeutic properties include that of antidepressant, antiseptic, anti-infectious, carminative, digestive, sedative and tonic.

Neroli oil is very relaxing and can relieve chronic anxiety, depression, fear, shock and stress and its calming effect can also be beneficial to the digestive tract for intestinal spasms, colitis and diarrhea. It can be useful in cases of insomnia, headaches, neuralgia and vertigo and can help when a patient is convalescing and is generally a good tonic. Neroli oil can help with the regenerating of skin cells and is useful for scar tissue, skin care and stretch marks.

Neroli oil not only smells exquisite, but can also relax and calm the nervous system, the digestive tract, and is helpful in skin care - so even if Neroli oil is a bit on the expensive side - it is well worth the price.
