acne

In this issue:

Chamomile

Chamomile has been used as an herb in healing and cosmetics for centuries, with the healing substance, azulen (azulene), extracted from the flowers.

This soothing herb is used internally to help promote calmness, help to de-stress the body, relax and to assist with insomnia. Topically it is used in rinses to add shine to hair and in creams to help soothe allergies and relieve congestion. It has a mild anti-inflammatory action and is a soothing and smoothing ingredient.

Chamomile is used as follows:

  • Made as a herbal tea to promote relaxation, calm anxiety and assist with digestive upsets - add a teaspoon of honey to this tea for some sweetness if required

  • Cooled down as a hair rinse

  • Cooled down as an eyebath

  • Cooled down as a mouth rinse

  • Cooled down as a skin toner

  • Used in steaming, it helps to clear a heavy head cold

Mint cucumber salad

½ Cucumber; 2½ cups unflavored natural yogurt; 1 clove garlic; Sea salt and black pepper; ½ teaspoon dried mint

Peel and cut cucumber into very thin slices. Beat or whisk the yogurt until smooth and after peeling and crushing the garlic add to the yogurt.

Add the cucumber, salt and pepper and fold it into the mixture gently. Place in serving dish and sprinkle the dried mint on top and refrigerate for at least 1½ hours before serving.

Do-it-yourself exfoliating and "perking-up" face pack.

If you are looking for a cheap and easy way to scrub away the dead skin, while perking up your facial skin, try the following. I have been using it for years, and find it extremely beneficial when my skin (and confidence) needs a boost.

Take some raw oats and pulverize them real fine in a pestle, next mix in some honey and blend it well together into a thick paste. Wash your skin and dry. Smooth the paste evenly over your face (do NOT apply near your eyes) and gently massage this gooey mixture all over your face and neck.

Leave on for at least 20 minutes and remove with capacious amounts of lukewarm water.

Rinse again with clean water and apply your favorite nourishing cream.

Skin cancer

An image of jet-setting people, is often that of people lounging for hours in the sun in their skimpy bathing costumes while sipping iced drinks and being sociable.

The flip side to this is wrinkled skin, looking aged and ancient before your time, as well as a visit or two to the dermatologist and possibly to the cancer ward as well.

I know that people do not like to be reminded of it, but sun tanning is a leading cause of skin cancer, and although it might be your quest to have a sun bronzed body this year, please be sensible about it.

Tips on sensible sun tanning:

If you have not been out in the sun for some time, be very careful. People on holiday make the painful mistake to overdo, and under-estimate the sun at the start of their holiday, and then spoil their vacation, with painful, damaging sunburn and possibly sun stroke as well.

  • Do it gradually and start with sessions lasting only 5-10 minutes, twice a day.
  • Do not tan when the sun is at its maximum strength - between 11 am and 2.30 pm.
  • Apply sunscreen before you start tanning - do NOT first burn a bit and then apply the lotion or cream.
  • Be extra faithful in your skin care regime when tanning.
